Paul Rose is one of the most influential figures in the world of dubstep. As label head of Hotflush Recordings, he’s helped release work from Benga, Shackleton and, of course, Joy Orbison and his RA #1 single of 2009, “Hyph Mngo.” Events-wise, he’s one of the masterminds behind Sub:stance, a night that has brought the likes of Mala, D-Bridge, Scion and Kode9 to Berlin’s Berghain. And, under the Scuba name, he’s produced two full-lengths of remarkably diverse work that reflect his wide-ranging taste and machine mastery. The forthcoming Triangulation album showcases Scuba’s talent for all things bass-oriented. But his recently birthed SCB moniker has reflected another huge interest of Rose’s, that of the four-four variety. Described recently as “Balearic techno with a rainy soul” by RA’s Max Bacharach, Rose’s SCB project has the same focus on emotional body music. It’s simply filtered through a different tempo. On his RA podcast, you’ll get to hear both, as Rose takes us through the world of Scuba and SCB in what seems like a very short 83 minutes.

„Volume 2″ führt einen erneut zurück in die Zeit, in der es noch nützte bei Betriebsstörungen mal aufs Gerät zu hauen und am Rädchen zu fummeln. Der warme Röhrenradiosound von Zooey Deschanel und M. Ward ist auch beim zweiten Auftritt als She & Him willkommen und dank des gereiften Zusammenspiel vermutlich mehr denn je. Sie singt mit kehliger Mädchenstimme emanzipatorische Liebeslieder, während Wards Gitarre im Hintergrund twangt und wimmert. Die Kollaboration des Songwriters mit der in Indiekreisen ohnedies bereits kultisch verehrten Schauspielerin hätte man nach einer Platte als von der To-Do-Liste abgehakt betrachten können: Das hätten wa… – Wäre nicht das Debüt bereits verteufelt gut gewesen und hätte mit „Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” sogar einen modernen Evergreen abgeworfen. „Volume 2″ ist als Ganzes runder und leidet nicht so sehr unter dem einen Stand-Out-Track. Opener „Thieves” ist ein berührender Klagegesang, die erste Single „In The Sun” von hopsendem Klavier begleiteter Mutmachpop, „Lingering Still” die Keiner-versteht-mich-Countrynummer, die Deschanels Charakter in „(500) Days Of Summer” gut zu Gesicht gestanden hätte. In „Home” singt sie „I could be sweet” und ihr eigener Backgroundgesang fällt ihr mit „I could be sweeter” ins Wort. Die Message ist klar: Hier hat keine süßer zu sein als sie. Ist ja gut, hat ja auch keiner behauptet.

“Volume 2″ erscheint heute bei Domino/Rough Trade.

Am 26. März ist das neue Album von Bonobo erschienen. Eigentlich ja ein Pflichtkauf, aber auch denjenigen, die erst einmal akustische Reize brauchen, kann geholfen werden.
