Es mag Zufall sein, dass „The Search Engine“ wie eine Mischung aus dem Intro von DJ Shadows „The Outsider“ (seiner vielleicht schwächsten Platte) und einem Ian-Brown-Stück auf dem legendären U.N.K.L.E.-Album beginnt. Abgesteckt wären die Leitplanken des ersten DJ Food-Longplayers nach elf (!) Jahren damit aber in aller Deutlichkeit. Vorbei die Zeiten, in denen Strictly Kev mit den legendären „Jazz Brakes“-Veröffentlichungen den Sound des Ninja-Tune-Labels quasi als Blaupause in die Welt trug, jetzt wird gerockt. Natürlich in übertragenem Sinne und mit illustrer Gästeschar: Natural Self, JG Thirlwell und Matt Johnson (The The) sind dabei, wenn Food die fordernde Quere der Vergangenheit gegen durch und durch kickenden Dancefloorsound eintauscht. „Wie Fatboy Slim mit Restwürde“ denkt man erschrocken beim Achteinhalbminüter „Giant“ (mit besagtem Matt Johnson als Dämon am Mikro), der in seinen Grundfesten ganz deutlich von den Charlatans gemauert wurde. Strictly Kev will jetzt und hier ganz deutlich an die Fleischtöpfe. Könnte ihm gelingen, denn hochwertiger hat in den vergangenen Monaten keiner schmutzige Coolness in den Rachen der „Solid Steel“-Gemeinde geworfen.

I was recently asked to play a night called Classic Material in London. The idea for the club is to give each month over to a year from Hip Hop’s past and only play tracks released during it. I was given 1989 and this set was all done from original vinyl, clicks, jumps and all.

Solid Steel (18th December): As part of our review of 2009, we look back at the most popular mixes as voted by you the listeners. We start with the ‘old skool’ residents of DK and Strictly Kev having their most popular mixes revisited. DK’s mix from April, is a bass heavy start with Two Fingers remixed by Spor, Mix n Blend and Bassnectar’s awesome ‘Heads Up’, followed by the massive Skream mix of La Roux. Classic go-go from Trouble Funk and Arcadion with their own take, plus jazz from Tenorio Jr and funky breaks from Radio trip. Strictly Kev’s July set gave us a taste of songs that inspired and helped form his EP, together with the tracks themselves. All the artists who feature on the record are present from The Dragons, Ken Nordine, Dr. Rubberfunk, Natural Self and Bundy K Brown.

Strictly Kev, der seit 2002 einzige Mensch hinter dem Pseudonym DJ Food, lässt mit seiner EP One Man’s Weird is Another Man’s World auf Ninja Tune wieder von sich hören. Der rockige “Illectrik Hoax” schlägt die Brücke zum Sechssaiter-fröhnenden Sublabel Counter und macht als Teaser auf das für 2010 angekündigte Album schon ganz wuschig.
