Fuck, welcher big player des original HipHop-Katechismus kann denn eigentlich noch? Die Ex-Provokateure des Mainstream in Text und Story wie Eminem, Public Enemy oder 50 Cent haben längst einen Platz als Business-Idioten und Celeb-Trottel eingenommen, das Conscious Movement stirbt als Accessoire eher in Schönheit, als dass wirklich noch mehr denn Rückzugsgefechte drin wären (selbst Talib Kweli lieferte zuletzt nur Durchschnitt ab) - und der Rest wird sowieso eingequarkt in schändlicher R’n'B-Schönheit aus der Mülltonne der Soundprogramme. Warum sollte Mos Def 2009 von diesem Unbill verschont geblieben sein? Nun, keine Ahnung, aber es ist so.

Der schmale, immer wieder überraschend unbedrohliche MC von der East Coast hat immer noch mehr zu sagen als andere, ohne dabei Sound und Catchiness aus den Augen zu verlieren. Bush ließ er bei dessen zögerlichem Handeln nach dem Hurrikan Katrina (”Katrina Klap”) noch schlechter aussehen, als der es ohnehin schon tat, und auch seine Konvertierung zum Islam zeigt, dass Mos Def eben nicht nur den eigenen Blockbuster-Status-quo verwalten möchte.

Und so wirkt das ganze neue Album - die Texte schneiden genauso wie die Tracks dazu. Allein schon der Opener “The Ecstatic”: So exzessiv kann man also doch noch klingen - das Stück wirkt fast wie ein Hybrid aus älteren D’n'B-Sounds Marke Roni Size und orientalischen Inspiriertheiten. Und trotz aller amtlichen Innovation, die die Musik sofort derart - Achtung BWL-Talk - unique erscheinen lässt, ist Mos Def weiterhin kein “schwieriger” Album-Autor. Man kommt immer mit, wird blendend unterhalten, das alles ist HipHop zum Mögen. Die Tatsache, dass es inhaltlich wie soundmäßig darüber hinaus noch so viel zu entdecken gibt, macht die Platte aber erst zu einem wirklichen Genre-Highlight des Jahres.
