Paul Rose is one of the most influential figures in the world of dubstep. As label head of Hotflush Recordings, he’s helped release work from Benga, Shackleton and, of course, Joy Orbison and his RA #1 single of 2009, “Hyph Mngo.” Events-wise, he’s one of the masterminds behind Sub:stance, a night that has brought the likes of Mala, D-Bridge, Scion and Kode9 to Berlin’s Berghain. And, under the Scuba name, he’s produced two full-lengths of remarkably diverse work that reflect his wide-ranging taste and machine mastery. The forthcoming Triangulation album showcases Scuba’s talent for all things bass-oriented. But his recently birthed SCB moniker has reflected another huge interest of Rose’s, that of the four-four variety. Described recently as “Balearic techno with a rainy soul” by RA’s Max Bacharach, Rose’s SCB project has the same focus on emotional body music. It’s simply filtered through a different tempo. On his RA podcast, you’ll get to hear both, as Rose takes us through the world of Scuba and SCB in what seems like a very short 83 minutes.
Essen’s Manuel Tur is the definition of a wunderkind. After starting to listen to electronic music at a young age, he stuck his head into the production game at the ripe age of 16, and hasn’t looked back since—releasing records under his own name, Arcade Mode, Blackbird, Jermaine Jones, Tweeq and as part of Knabberbox, Dplay, Ribn and Ufoboys. To put it bluntly, the kid has had a lot of practice in a very short time.
He puts it to good use on his forthcoming debut album for Freerange, 0201, which takes advantage of the LP format by cobbling together a collection of tracks that complement one another beautifully. It’s a cliché, but it’s most assuredly an album—not a rushed status report of where Tur is at in 2009.
Consider his RA podcast the same. Tur downplays the mix by saying it’s simply what he’s been digging of late—and what you might be able to expect from his set at the RA by day Sonar party coming up later this week. But we know better. Tur has crafted a beautiful set that takes in deep house, techno and a couple of nice surprises along the way.
There’s something happening in New York at the moment. The funny thing? Only a few of the people involved actually live there. Black Jazz Consortium, DJ Qu, Anthony Parasole, Jus-Ed and Levon Vincent all form a loose scene of DJs and producers gathered around Ed’s Underground Quality imprint—and they’re busy engineering a electronic music renaissance in the city. While Black Jazz, Qu and Parasole live in the city, though, Ed makes his home in Connecticut, and Vincent currently resides in Indiana.
The group all became friends through connections to the city’s Halycon record store in the early ’00s when it was located at Smith Street, but we’ll let Vincent tell that story below. What you need to know now: Ever since his move to the Midwest six months ago, Vincent has been on fire production-wise, receiving praise from DJs such as Marcel Dettmann, DJ Deep and Martin Landsky for his releases on his own Novel Sound imprint and his and Parasole’s Deconstruct Music. The duo will be taking their show on the road this upcoming weekend for a date—their first—at Berlin’s Berghain. This week’s RA podcast is a sampler of what you can expect from Vincent’s set.
